Toto Wolff has said to German reporters that he believes Pascal Wehrlein needs another couple of years before being promoted to the works Mercedes team.
The German, who is one of the favourites to replace Nico Rosberg at Mercedes for next season has one year of Formula One racing behind him with the Manor team in 2016. He also comes with a lot of testing experience, both in the former 2015/16 era and on the new rubber compounds for 2017. He is also a former DTM Champion with the Mercedes group, the highest profile Domestic racing series in Germany.
“If I had my Christmas wish, it would be for a year or two in a midfield team for him.
“But I have to find a good compromise Christmas list instead, and perhaps, as Nico has taken a courageous decision, we must take a courageous decision as well,” Wolff said to German news agency DPA.
Wehrlein has been in discussion with Sauber about a possible drive for next season, which were started before the news of Nico Rosberg broke. Those negotiations are said to be on hold, pending the outcome of the Mercedes seat.
Other possible drivers whose names have been reported extensively include Valtteri Bottas and Fernando Alonso.
