Winter testing could be split between Barcelona and Bahrain

Autosport has reported that teams could be offered the option of testing in Bahrain or Barcelona this winter, with teams possibly testing in both locations at the same time.

Historically, teams have tested predominately in Barcelona although the lower temperatures in Europe during February are often unrepresentative of Grand Prix conditions given the cooler temperatures. Bahrain has conducted winter testing before, and is where Pirelli would like it to take place next year, although some teams don’t want to take on the extra cost.

With the tests due to take place a the end of February (27 February – 2 March) and (7-10 March), it was expected that both tests would take place in Barcelona after a majority decided against the Bahrain option.

According to Autosport a further push this weekend in Malaysia to put together a test session in Bahrain. That could be a case that the second test is moved from Barcelona to Bahrain, or there is split testing, with some teams staying in Europe. They have suggested that Pirelli are willing to pay for some of the expenses to go there, given it will cost more for the teams to head to the Middle East.

The test sessions have yet to be confirmed by the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya who often open the circuit to fans for the test sessions during the winter.
