Fernando Alonso has once again criticised McLaren’s engine supplier Honda, claiming that the team are being held from winning by the engine manufacturer.
While it isn’t unheard of for Fernando Alonso to complain about the engine provided by Honda, once even comparing it to ‘GP2’ over the lack of speed since they came back into the sport in 2015, the Spaniard has once again gone on the attack during winter testing.
Optimism has waned at the team following a series of engine failures during winter testing over the last 10 days, which even the teams Eric Boullier has said there is ‘maximum strain’ in their relation.
When referring to the lack of speed, which looks to be around 30kph on the straight, talking to the press today Alonso joked when referring to taking corners flat out, “Oh yeah, for us, not only Turn 3. For us nearly all the corners are flat.”
The combination of a lack of reliability and lack of power is a toxic one, and has been the achilles heal of the team since Honda returned to the sport in 2015.
