Sebastian Vettel is on the radar for a Mercedes seat in 2018 according to Red Bull boss Helmut Marko, coming off the back of a difficult year for the German at Ferrari.
Mercedes lost their current World Champion Nico Rosberg at the end of last season after he took the extraordinary step by reaching his goal of a Formula One title. It left Mercedes in a bit of a situation coming so late in the year, and many of the big names including Vettel and McLaren driver Fernando Alonso under contract at their current teams.
The remedy was a short term solution by gaining the services of Valtteri Bottas on a one year contract, and Williams getting Felipe Massa out of retirement to cover. With the big names of Vettel and Alonso on the next year, Bottas is under pressure to deliver to retain his seat, although if it doesn’t work out you would assume there would always be a seat for him at Williams, given the one year extension for Massa.
At least that is what Helmut Marko of Red Bull told German publication Bild, “Frankly, Sebastian’s results from 2016 did not reflect his class.
“There were some races where he would have done much better if he just wasn’t unlucky Now, he will definitely try to be successful and in the end decide what will be the best for him personally.”
