Suggestions that Rio Haryanto doesn’t have the budget to race to the end of the season have reappeared this weekend, with a surprise driver surfacing as a potential replacement for the Indonesian.
Stoffel Vandoorne has appeared as the leading name in line to replace Haryanto at Manor, in a surprise move which would see a head-to-head between himself and Pascal Wehrlein, a battle between two drivers of the ‘next generation’.
Haryanto is said to have enough budget to this weekends Hungarian Grand Prix, with rumblings that money could be difficult to get hold of going forward, despite a number of initiatives to raise finance. Most likely to have taken the season would be either Jordan King (currently driving in GP2) and former driver and reserve driver Alexander Rossi (currently racing in Indycar).
In an interview with Sky Sports F1, McLaren’s Eric Boullier didn’t confirm nor deny such a move was likely, although suggested it hadn’t been formally discussed with the Manor team.
