Jenson Button was high on their shortlist, but it looks like the stars are aligning for Lance Stroll to be confirmed alongside Valtteri Bottas at Williams.
The Canadian F3 driver has enjoyed a rich vein of form this summer, currently leading the European Formula 3 championship with the Prema team on the back of a promising debut season finishing fifth. Stroll has also been part of the Williams family since the start of the year, effectively defecting from the Ferrari Driver Academy to become a development driver at the Grove based team alongside GP2 driver Alex Lynn.
With few ‘high profile’ drivers available on the market, Sergio Perez looking like he will stay at Force India for example, it looks like Williams will take a punt on a young driver once again, as they have done in the past with Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Nico Hulkenberg. Added to that, Lance’s father is a multi-billionaire and would be an interesting investor for the Williams team, just as Justin King is at Manor with his son Jordan King.
The first hurdle is to get his superlicence which is the key to opening the door of Formula One, which will be done by winning the F3 championship and it is yet to be seen if he will drive in any FP1 sessions between now and the end of the season.
