Sauber have confirmed this afternoon that Ferrari test driver Antonio Giovanzzi will replace Pascal Wehrlein for the upcoming Barcelona test next week.
Wehrlein has a back injury following a crash at the Race of Champions last month in Miami. The German last week ruled himself out of the first test in Barcelona which is due to start on Monday. No further comment has been made beyond testing next week, including fitness for the first race in Melbourne at the end of March.
His replacement for next week will be new Ferrari test driver and GP2 Vice Champion Antonio Giovanazzi, who has recently enjoyed a short testing session with Ferrari at their test track at Fiorano. He said, “I thank the Sauber F1 Team for making this real, and also Ferrari for allowing me to replace Pascal for test one in Barcelona.”
“It is a pity that I cannot be in the car during the first test days, but I will be in Barcelona in order to get familiar with the team’s procedures and also to follow the Sauber C36-Ferrari on track,” states Pascal Wehrlein.
