Nico Rosberg has been confirmed to drive for Mercedes in 2017 and 2018 this morning, with the German signing a new contract for the team.
This news was announced on social media on Friday morning, after Rosberg hired the services of former driver Gerhard Berger to negotiate his contract on his behalf. Despite their obvious differences and frosty relationship, it means that Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton will be teammates again next season and the year after, with Hamilton’s contract also up for renewal in 2018.
It blocks out the suggestion that Sebastian Vettel could make an early jump from Ferrari, with the earliest the German could make to Mercedes in 2019, or of course that of Fernando Alonso who has set his sights on creating a super-team at McLaren.
Nico has been at the Mercedes project since the beginning, joining the team in 2010, the year after the what was then Brawn GP won the World Championship with Jenson Button.
