Canadian GP2 driver Nicholas Latifi has joined Renault as a test driver as part of a long term development programme.
The 20 year old from Toronto will join Renault with the aim to get a Super Licence for Formula One. This will then enable him to take part in official practice sessions, with the team hoping this can be by the end of the season.
Latifi will be driving for the renowned DAMS team in GP2 this season, the established path for drivers to develop before entering Formula One.
New Renault Sport Racing Director, Fredric Vasseur and former GP2 team boss said, “Nicholas is a fast-developing young talent who has competed in a diverse selection of championships in his short career to date.
“We are excited at the prospect of nurturing him into a Formula One-ready entity at such a dynamic time for the team.
“As well as contesting the GP2 Series – which is a perfect proving ground for new drivers – Nicholas will go through a programme with us to attain his Super Licence with a view to contesting at least one FP1 session this year. We’re proud to have him on board.”
This season Renault have enlisted the help of Esteban Ocon, who although a Mercedes driver has been loaded to Renault as their official third driver.
