McLaren is expected to announce shortly they are to enter a partnership with BP, replacing long term petroleum partner Mobil.
The team was reported to have been in a battle with Renault for BP, despite the manufacturer having a long standing relationship with Total. With Renault supplied Red Bull gaining the Mobil backing for 2017, which again is expected to be announced shortly, a larger presence for Total at the team could be expected. This isnt the first time Honda has been assoiciated with BP though, having a long relationship under the Castrol branding in motorbikes and more recently the World Touring Car Championship.
It is the first time since 1994, and what was then the original Lotus team, that a Formula One team will be carrying the BP brand. Joe Saward has reported though that BP had a ten year deal with BMW, which expired last year that never saw the light of day due to the teams existing relationship with Petronas, before they moved to Mercedes.
