McLaren changes car name designation

McLaren have dropped the MP4 designation of car name for the first time since the early 80’s, with an announcement on the new name this morning.

The 2017 car will be called MCL32, one of the pieces of changing the brand of McLaren with new boss Zak Brown on-board following the departure of long-term boss Ron Dennis. It was in fact Dennis who brought the MP4 name to the team following his ‘Marlboro Project 4’ in Formula Two, which he later merged with McLaren.

It is part of a wider set of changes at the team which is expected to include a new colourscheme, a move away from the corporate and stale grey from the previous two decades, with a possible return to the traditional McLaren orange.
