Impatient Verstappen loses out in Toro Rosso battle

Despite having fast cars this weekend in Australia, a double points finish at the lower end of the top ten was a disappointing result for Toro Rosso.

Verstappen before the race was being billed as a possible podium contender, but a wrong strategy call through the red flag period, taking the soft tyre instead of the medium meant that a strong finish would be watered down to a ninth and tenth for the Red Bull sister team.

The race long battle between the two drivers got very tense, with Verstappen extremely impatient to overtake Sainz at times, with the Dutch driver claiming that he could do a better job of overtaking the cars in front.

With the young Dutchman sounding very hot-headed at times, he also spun at the back of the group, before catching back up to his teammate in no time at all.

He was also upset with the team after telling them that he was ready to change his first set of tyres, before stopping Carlos Sainz Jr first, which saw him ahead at the pitstop.

The Dutchman said after the race, “Quite a frustrating afternoon. We had a great start to the race and were able to keep the Mercedes behind. The first pit-stop was also good. We had great pace and I didn’t have pressure from behind, but after the red flag we had a bit of a miscommunication for the second stop and it got very difficult.

“We have a fantastic car and to finish P10 here is not where we should be. I’m very disappointed as this was a great opportunity for us to get a very good result. Now we just need to focus on the next race and try and score more points than today.”
