Lewis Hamilton hit the top of the standings in the Second Free Practice session for the 2016 Russian Grand Prix.
The current World Champion switched the lead to his championship leader teammate, with a commanding lead of six tenths of a second from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Despite finishing second, it wasn’t a great session for Vettel, stopping on the start finish straight with electrical failure. Stopping out on the circuit, it brought out the virtual safety car. He was a couple of tenths faster than first session leader Rosberg.
McLaren made an improvement in the afternoon, getting both their cars into the top ten. Jenson Button in eighth, with Fernando Alonso rounding out the top ten. Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz would narrowly miss out in the top ten, beating Force India and Haas in the midfield battle.
Having not run in the morning session Nico Hulkenberg was faster than his team mate Sergio Perez, while the other driver to have missed out in the earlier running – Kevin Magnussen was also faster than his Renault teammate.
Manor had more running than the morning session, although Pascal Wehrlein stopped on the circuit after the chequered flag fell. Sauber once again propped up the field, Ericsson half a second down on the back of the pack.
