Esteban Gutierrez is to drive in Formula E it was announced at a press event in Mexico on Monday, marking another former Formula One drive to make the transition to the electric series.
The former Sauber and Haas race driver will make his debut at his home race in Mexico, which is due to take place on April 1st, with a second drive confirmed for the New York weekend in July. As an ambassador for the series, it is hoped he will get a full time drive in the fourth season, due to start at the tail end of this year and further drives could be possible this current season.
A team has yet to be confirmed, but the Mexican is in discussion with a number over the drive this season. It is worth remembering that a number of drivers dovetail their commitments in the WEC with Formula E, and clashes this season could see a number absent – notably the New York weekend.
Gutierrez failed to score a point for Haas this season, criticised by the team for not doing so, and was seen on camera having an argument with team principal Gunther Steiner. He lost the Haas drive to Kevin Magnussen, and the Ferrari reserve driver role which he held the previous season has been given to GP2 championship runner up Antonio Giovanazzi.
