Apple’s interest in Formula One switches to McLaren

Apple, the American technology giant is said to be linked to a purchase of McLaren according to the Financial Times.

Negotiations are said to have started for Apple to either purchase or have a strategic partnership with the McLaren Group, consisting of their advanced technologies, cars and Formula One team. It comes on the back of suggestions that Apple was initially in the running to purchase Formula One, which in the end went to Liberty Media in a deal which was announced a couple of weeks ago.

Apple is a cash rich company, mainly on the back of the ever popular iPhone which contributes the majority of their profits although they have been looking to the future. The driverless car concept has been talked about for the last few years, and is something Apple is said to be developing as they search to find the next big hit. Partnering with Apple on this, an upmarket automotive company such as McLaren would fit with the Apple ethos.

Owning the McLaren Formula One team would also give them a partnership with Honda, possibly also partnering with them also.
