Alonso ruled out of Bahrain Grand Prix, Vandoorne to deputise

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso has been ruled out of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend on medical grounds.

The Spaniard had a large accident at the Australian Grand Prix ten days ago, which flipped the car through the gravel trap after hitting the Haas of Esteban Gutierrez in the braking zone to turn 3.

While he was able to exit the car unharmed, a CT scan of his chest at in the lead up to the Bahrain Grand Prix as part of the regular medical after a large crash has shown there isn’t enough of an improvement to allow his to race this weekend. The statement confirmed that he would have to repeat the procedure before the Chinese Grand Prix in two weeks time.

Stoffel Vandoorne will deputise as McLaren’s official reserve driver, alongside teammate Jenson Button.
